Learning to cope and recover should take less time for a person who has been in highly stressful situations before and was able to handle them well. This type of person has the learned tools needed to be able to deal with high or extreme stress.

Children and extreme stress or trauma situations are a serious situation that warrants professional intervention. Because children aren't capable of understanding what is going on within, but they may show symptoms. A child in this situation might show signs of extreme withdrawal, exhibit aggressiveness, or have physical and other symptoms of stress reactions. Depending on the situation, the parents may need to be involved so they can help their child deal with the stress.


There is a huge difference between adults, young children and teens when it comes to effectively dealing with extreme stress. Professional treatment may be the best route for any of the three categories and especially for young children. Depending on the nature of the trauma, there may need to be ongoing long term support for adults and teens as well. Regardless of what kind of case, good friends and family can play a major and positive in recovery by offering a personal support system.
